Sandra Armenta's Endorsement: A Shared Vision for Special Education in the Garvey School District

I'm honored to have received the endorsement of Sandra Armenta, a dedicated advocate for special education and a respected member of the Rosemead City Council. Her deep commitment to supporting families and students with special needs aligns perfectly with my vision for the Garvey School District. In this blog, I share how Sandra’s inspiring journey and leadership have strengthened my resolve to prioritize inclusivity and support for every student. Together, we can build a more compassionate, understanding, and empowering environment for all. Let's continue advocating for a brighter future for our children!

As a candidate for the Garvey School District Board, I am incredibly honored to have the endorsement of Sandra Armenta, a dedicated member of the Rosemead City Council and a passionate advocate for special needs students. Sandra’s 21 years of experience as both a Special Education and General Education teacher have made her a true champion for families who need guidance and support. Her work in this community has left a lasting impact, and I’m excited to share how her endorsement strengthens my vision for enhancing special education in our district.

Sandra Armenta's Journey in Special Education

Sandra’s journey began over two decades ago, working closely with families and students to ensure they had access to quality education and essential services. Her efforts to inform parents about their rights and provide them with the resources needed to support their children have made a profound difference in Rosemead and beyond.

Sandra’s commitment to advocating for special needs students isn't just professional—it's deeply rooted in her passion for education. Her ability to navigate the complexities of special education, while always prioritizing the needs of children, has set a standard I hope to uphold as a member of the Garvey School District Board.

How Sandra's Vision Aligns with My Mission

Sandra Armenta's dedication to special needs students aligns perfectly with my vision for the Garvey School District. I believe that every child, regardless of their abilities or challenges, deserves a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Her approach to being present, listening to families, and ensuring their voices are heard resonates strongly with my goals for our district.

If elected, I plan to expand on Sandra’s work by advocating for:

  1. Increased Funding for Special Education Programs – I will push for more resources to support students with special needs, ensuring they have access to individualized education plans, specialized equipment, and dedicated support staff.

  2. Building Awareness and Understanding – By working closely with parents, teachers, and community members, I aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by special needs students and provide workshops and resources to empower families.

  3. Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment – All students, regardless of their abilities, should feel welcomed and valued. I will advocate for inclusive practices, where special education students learn alongside their peers, fostering empathy, understanding, and friendship.

My Plan for Enhancing Special Education in Garvey School District

1. Engaging with Families and Building Support Networks

Just as Sandra has done throughout her career, I intend to build strong relationships with families. I will organize regular forums and support groups where parents can share their experiences, challenges, and ideas. By creating a space for open dialogue, we can work together to address the needs of our special education community.

2. Strengthening Teacher Training and Support

Teachers play a critical role in supporting special needs students, and they need ongoing training and resources to succeed. I will advocate for:

  • Professional development workshops on best practices in special education.

  • Mentorship programs pairing experienced special education teachers with new educators.

  • Access to the latest tools and technologies that aid in teaching students with special needs.

3. Collaboration with Community Partners

To create a holistic support system, I will seek partnerships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and therapy centers. These collaborations will enable us to offer services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling within our schools, making it easier for families to access the help their children need.

4. Expanding Early Intervention Programs

Early intervention is crucial for special needs students. I will advocate for programs that identify learning challenges early on, ensuring that students receive the support they need from the start. This includes implementing screenings, assessments, and resources for families to navigate the special education process.

5. Increasing Funding and Resources

Securing additional funding for special education is a top priority. I will work to identify grants, state funding, and partnerships that can provide our schools with the resources they need to support every child. By doing so, we can provide students with the tools, technology, and assistance that will enable them to thrive.

Q&A: Addressing Common Questions about Special Education

1. How will you ensure that special education students receive the support they need?
I plan to work closely with teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure that our special education programs are well-funded, staffed, and equipped with the necessary resources to provide individualized support.

2. How can we create a more inclusive environment for special needs students?
By promoting inclusive teaching practices and providing professional development for teachers, we can create classrooms where all students, regardless of their abilities, feel welcomed and supported.

3. What role will parents play in your plan for special education?
Parents are crucial partners in the education of special needs students. I will establish regular forums and support networks to ensure that parents have a voice in decision-making and access to resources.

4. How will you address the shortage of special education teachers?
I will advocate for incentives such as signing bonuses, ongoing training, and mentorship programs to attract and retain talented special education teachers.

5. What steps will you take to improve early intervention for special needs children?
I plan to implement early screening programs and provide training for teachers to identify learning challenges as early as possible, ensuring that students receive the support they need from a young age.

Why This Matters: Creating a More Inclusive Future

Sandra Armenta’s endorsement is more than just a show of support—it’s a testament to our shared commitment to improving the lives of special needs students in the Garvey School District. By working together, we can create a more inclusive environment where every child feels valued, understood, and capable of achieving their full potential.

I am deeply grateful for Sandra’s trust and support, and I am dedicated to carrying forward her mission of advocacy, compassion, and inclusivity. As we continue this journey, I look forward to building on the foundation she has laid and working tirelessly to ensure that all students, regardless of their abilities, receive the education they deserve.

As a dedicated mother, PTA president, and active community member, I, Sydney 'Susie' Cubas, am running for the Garvey School District Board to bring a fresh perspective and a genuine commitment to excellence. With a passion for building stronger community connections, enhancing educational opportunities, and advocating for our diverse families, I believe that together, we can create a brighter future for every student in the district. Join me on this journey as we work towards making our schools a place where every child thrives.

As a candidate for the Garvey School District Board of Education, I, Sydney "Susie" Cubas, am committed to ensuring that every agenda item aligns with our mission to enhance student success, support our dedicated teachers, and build a stronger connection with our community. The recent Garvey School District Board Meeting on September 19, 2024, addressed several key topics that resonate deeply with my vision for our schools.

1. Supporting Student Opportunities through Programs:

The board discussed approving various programs that aim to enrich student experiences, such as the Pali Institute Outdoor Education Program and the AstroCamp for Hillcrest School. As a candidate, I am passionate about expanding these experiential learning opportunities. I believe that by providing our children with hands-on learning experiences, we help them develop essential skills that go beyond the classroom.

My Plan:

  • Advocate for more programs that offer real-world learning opportunities.

  • Work closely with parents, teachers, and community members to fund and support these initiatives through fundraising and partnerships.

2. Strengthening Our Educational Staff:

The Board approved the Personnel Assignment Order No. 24-25-04, which highlights the recruitment and retention of qualified teachers and staff. I recognize that our teachers are the backbone of our educational system, and I’m committed to ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive.

My Plan:

  • Develop a mentorship program where experienced teachers can guide new staff, ensuring a smooth transition and a shared commitment to student success.

  • Advocate for competitive salaries and professional development opportunities to retain top talent.

3. Enhancing Our Dual Language Programs:

The Legal Services Agreement with Bu Law Group, P.C. ensures that credentialed Dual Language teachers have the support they need for H-1B Extension Petitions. This effort aligns with my vision of creating a multilingual and multicultural learning environment for our students.

My Plan:

  • Expand the Dual Language Programs to provide students with the skills they need to thrive in a global community.

  • Collaborate with community leaders to ensure these programs are culturally inclusive and reflective of the district's diversity.

4. Building Strong Community Connections:

The agenda also covered the Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) Grant, which focuses on family and community engagement, extended learning opportunities, and positive school climates. As your candidate, I am dedicated to fostering a collaborative relationship between parents, teachers, and community leaders to create a holistic and supportive educational environment.

My Plan:

  • Host quarterly community events to celebrate student achievements and engage families in the educational process.

  • Create a Parent-Community Council that works alongside the Board to ensure that the voices of our diverse community are heard and represented.

5. Financial Transparency and Accountability:

The Board's focus on contracts and agreements, such as the Follett School Solutions renewal and the engineering services for Duff Language Magnet Academy, shows the importance of managing our district’s resources efficiently. As a board member, I will prioritize financial transparency and ensure that every dollar is invested wisely to benefit our students.

My Plan:

  • Establish a financial oversight committee that includes parents, teachers, and community members to provide input on budget allocation.

  • Regularly communicate budget decisions to the public, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Conclusion: Together, We Can Build a Better Future for Our Students

The recent Board Meeting agenda reflects the wide range of issues that affect our district's success.
