STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programs have been revolutionizing education across California, preparing students for an ever-evolving technological world. Districts such as Los Angeles Unified, San Bernardino City Unified, Menifee Union, Sacramento City Unified, and Fresno Unified have implemented successful STEAM initiatives, setting standards for others to follow.

As a candidate for the Garvey School District Board, I’m committed to bringing the same level of innovation and opportunities to our schools.

To make this vision a reality, I plan to meet with educational leaders from these districts, learn from their successes, and figure out how we can fast-track the implementation of STEAM programs for Garvey students.

The blueprint for success is clear, and it’s time for Garvey to follow suit.

Here’s how we can make it happen, step by step, with lessons learned from some of California’s top-performing districts.

Success Stories from California’s Top STEAM Districts

1. Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD):
LAUSD is a leader in STEAM education, thanks to partnerships with institutions like UCLA. They offer cutting-edge programs that focus on robotics, coding, and real-world applications, ensuring that students from all backgrounds benefit. LAUSD’s focus on equity ensures that underserved communities have access to the same high-quality STEAM education, helping to bridge the achievement gap and provide opportunities for all.

2. San Bernardino City Unified School District:
San Bernardino has seen tremendous success by integrating project-based learning with real-world applications. Students are encouraged to solve practical problems using STEAM principles, while partnerships with local businesses provide hands-on experiences that make learning relevant and exciting. This approach ensures that students learn how to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.

3. Menifee Union School District - Harvest Hill STEAM Academy:
Menifee Union has turned STEAM education into an engaging and innovative journey. The district’s focus on creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking has led to impressive results. By forging strong community partnerships and adopting innovative teaching methods, Menifee Union equips students with 21st-century skills like problem-solving and effective communication, preparing them for future challenges.

4. Sacramento City Unified School District:
Sacramento’s MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program has helped students, particularly those from underserved communities, excel in STEAM fields. This program provides a clear pathway from K-12 education to college, ensuring that students are prepared for both academic and career success. Sacramento City’s approach to STEAM education serves as a model for helping students of all backgrounds achieve their full potential.

5. Fresno Unified School District:
Fresno Unified’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program is another success story. CTE offers students hands-on experience in fields like health sciences, engineering, and information technology. By combining traditional classroom learning with career preparation, Fresno is ensuring that students are ready for the workforce. This holistic approach to education helps students become well-rounded and career-ready.

How We Can Bring STEAM to Garvey: My Plan

As I’ve learned from reading from these successful districts, implementing STEAM programs doesn’t have to be slow or overly complicated. Here’s how I plan to fast-track STEAM education in the Garvey School District:

1. Partner with Local Businesses and Universities

Successful districts like LAUSD and San Bernardino have partnered with local industries and universities to bring resources, mentorship, and real-world projects to their students. I plan to work closely with tech companies, engineering firms, and local colleges to ensure Garvey students have similar opportunities. These partnerships will provide internships, classroom resources, and hands-on learning experiences that make education meaningful.

2. Apply for State and Federal Grants

Programs like California’s K-12 Strong Workforce Program and federal STEAM grants provide the financial support needed to launch these initiatives. By aggressively pursuing these grants, I will ensure that Garvey has the funding to build out our STEAM programs without relying solely on district funds. Grants can be the key to bringing advanced technology and innovative learning experiences into our classrooms.

3. Invest in Teacher Training

Teachers are the backbone of any successful STEAM program. I will focus on providing professional development opportunities that equip teachers to integrate STEAM into their lessons. From learning to teach coding and digital arts to mastering project-based learning, Garvey’s teachers will have the support and resources they need. Additionally, I will implement mentorship programs, pairing our teachers with professionals from STEAM fields to further enhance their teaching methods.

4. Start with Pilot Programs

To ensure that we move quickly and effectively, I plan to launch pilot STEAM programs in select elementary and middle schools. These pilot programs will create a strong foundation for STEAM learning and serve as models for expanding STEAM district-wide. By focusing on both elementary and middle schools, we can ensure that students develop a passion for STEAM from an early age.

5. Incorporate Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning allows students to apply STEAM principles to solve real-world problems. For example, students could work on projects that address community issues like environmental sustainability or urban planning. These projects not only teach essential STEAM skills but also help students connect their learning to the world around them, making education more engaging and impactful.

6. Expand After-School and Summer Programs

STEAM education shouldn’t be limited to the school day. I will advocate for after-school clubs and summer camps that focus on STEAM subjects like robotics, engineering, coding, and the arts. These programs will provide students with additional learning opportunities and foster a deeper love for STEAM subjects.

A Path to Success

By learning from the success of districts like LAUSD, San Bernardino, and Menifee Union, we can bring transformative STEAM education to Garvey. If elected, I am committed to fast-tracking these programs so that every student in our district has the opportunity to thrive. STEAM education isn’t just about mastering subjects—it’s about shaping the future leaders, thinkers, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

Supporting Teachers for a Better Future: Susie Cubas' Vision for Empowering Educators

Susie Cubas' vision for supporting teachers within the Garvey School District by advocating for better resources, competitive salaries, and robust professional development programs. It outlines her commitment to enhancing teacher well-being through mentorships, modern classroom supplies, and open communication. By ensuring teachers feel valued and supported, Susie aims to improve the overall educational experience, fostering success for both educators and students alike. Investing in teachers means investing in the future of our children, and Susie is dedicated to making this a reality if elected to the Garvey School District Board of Education.

Teachers are the backbone of our educational system, shaping the minds of the next generation and guiding students through their formative years. As a candidate for the Garvey School District Board of Education, Susie Cubas is committed to ensuring that teachers receive the support, resources, and compensation they deserve. Her vision is centered on creating an environment where educators are empowered to excel in their profession, ensuring students receive the highest quality education possible.

The Importance of Supporting Teachers

Supporting teachers is essential for fostering a successful school environment. When teachers feel valued, respected, and supported, they are more likely to engage students effectively, employ innovative teaching methods, and maintain a positive, nurturing classroom environment. Studies show that teacher satisfaction directly correlates with student achievement. By ensuring that educators have access to the resources and professional growth opportunities they need, the district benefits not only from happier teachers but also from higher student success.

Professional Development: Continuous Growth for Educators

One of Susie Cubas top priorities is advocating for robust professional development programs. Education is a dynamic field, and as standards and methods evolve, it’s essential for teachers to stay current with the latest tools and techniques.

Ongoing Training Programs:

Susie is committed to introducing comprehensive professional development opportunities that allow teachers to continuously refine their skills. From training on the latest educational technology to workshops on inclusive teaching methods, she aims to foster a culture of lifelong learning within the district.

Mentorship Programs:

Recognizing the importance of peer-to-peer learning, Susie plans to advocate for mentorship programs where experienced educators can provide guidance to newer teachers. This mentorship approach offers valuable insights, reduces teacher burnout, and helps build a supportive professional community.

Workshops Focused on Student Needs:

To address the unique challenges faced by students, Susie supports implementing workshops targeting specific issues like mental health awareness, supporting students from diverse backgrounds, and promoting inclusivity in the classroom. These resources will ensure that teachers are equipped to support all students equitably.

Competitive Salaries: Rewarding the Heart of Our Schools

Teachers deserve competitive salaries that reflect their dedication to shaping young minds. Unfortunately, teacher compensation has not always kept pace with the increasing demands of the profession. Susie Cubas believes in offering salaries that not only attract top talent but also retain experienced educators.

Fighting for Better Pay:

Susie’s plan includes working with the district to secure funding for teacher salary increases. She understands that to keep talented educators, competitive wages must be offered. Her commitment to fair compensation ensures that teachers are adequately rewarded for their essential contributions.

Stipends for Extra Duties:

Many teachers take on additional responsibilities, such as coaching, leading extracurricular activities, or serving on committees. Susie’s plan includes advocating for stipends that compensate teachers for these extra duties, ensuring they are recognized and rewarded for their full contribution to the school community.

Incentive-Based Raises:

Susie plans to introduce incentive-based raises that reward teachers for continuous professional development, leadership roles, and contributions to student success. By tying financial incentives to growth and achievement, the district can encourage excellence while compensating teachers fairly.

Adequate Resources for Effective Teaching

Beyond professional development and competitive salaries, Susie Cubas is committed to ensuring that teachers have access to the necessary materials and resources for creating engaging and effective lessons.

Classroom Supplies:

Teachers should never have to spend their own money on basic supplies. Susie is determined to advocate for budget increases that ensure fully stocked classrooms, so teachers can focus on teaching instead of worrying about essential materials.

Technology and Digital Resources:

In today's world, technology is an integral part of education. Susie aims to equip classrooms with the latest technology, such as computers, tablets, and educational software. Access to these tools will allow teachers to enhance their lessons and better prepare students for a technology-driven future.

Support Staff:

Teachers can’t do it all alone. Susie will advocate for increased funding to hire support staff such as teacher’s aides, counselors, and specialists. These additional team members will help lighten teachers' workloads and provide targeted support to students who need it.

Building a Collaborative School Environment

Lastly, Susie Cubas envisions a school culture where teachers, administrators, parents, and the community collaborate to improve the educational experience.

Open Communication:

Susie believes that communication between teachers and administrators should be open and transparent. She will create regular forums where educators can voice their concerns, share ideas, and collaborate on solutions.

Parental Involvement:

Parents are a crucial part of the success of schools. Susie is committed to encouraging parental involvement by creating opportunities for parents to engage with teachers and understand their challenges. A strong parent-teacher relationship will ensure that both parties work toward the same goals for student success.

Community Support:

Beyond parents, Susie wants to build strong ties between the district and the local community. From local businesses to nonprofit organizations, many potential partners can offer support—whether through financial contributions, volunteer efforts, or educational programs.

Investing in Teachers is Investing in Our Future

Susie Cubas understands that teachers are the cornerstone of a successful education system. By providing them with the resources, training, and compensation they need, we can create a thriving educational environment that benefits both students and educators. If elected to the Garvey School District Board of Education, Susie will work tirelessly to ensure that teachers receive the support they deserve, knowing that when teachers succeed, students succeed.

Why I’m Running for the Garvey School Board: A Personal Story

Kids at play, building not just friendships but also curiosity, creativity, and the skills they'll carry into the future. Let's foster an environment where play inspires learning and every child feels empowered to explore, dream, and grow.

Sydney 'Susie' Cubas

Candidate for Garvey School District Board of Education

'For Our Kids, Our Community, Our Future.

As a mother of two daughters growing up in the Garvey School District, my connection to our schools is deeply personal. I’m not just another candidate; I’m a community member, neighbor, and mother who believes in the potential of every child in this district. Our students deserve the best education, and I am running for the Garvey School Board to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. Through my experience with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and my professional background in law, I have gained a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities our schools face. I am ready to take these challenges head-on and help lead our district toward a brighter future.

My Connection to Rosemead and the Garvey School District

Rosemead has been my home since 2018, but my family has been rooted in this community since 2004. We've owned property here for over 20 years, and during that time, I’ve come to understand the unique needs of our community. The Garvey School District, founded in 1891, serves portions of Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, and parts of unincorporated Los Angeles County. It’s the second oldest elementary district in Los Angeles County, and I’m proud to call it home. The district serves over 6,000 students from diverse backgrounds, predominantly Asian and Latin American. Raising my daughters here and being actively involved in their schools, including Arlene Bitely Elementary School, I’ve seen both the strengths and areas where improvement is needed. This personal experience drives my passion to advocate for every student in our district, just as I do for my own children.

Why I’m Running

I’m running for the Garvey School Board because I want to make a meaningful difference for all families in our district. Our community is diverse, vibrant, and filled with potential. The Garvey School District operates nine elementary schools, one pre-K-8 school, and two intermediate schools. These schools serve more than 6,000 students from a wide range of backgrounds. I believe that every child deserves access to the best educational opportunities, and I’m committed to advocating for programs that foster academic excellence, personal growth, and inclusivity. I’ve seen firsthand the impact strong leadership can have on a school district, and I’m ready to bring my skills and passion to the Garvey School Board to ensure we continue to move forward.

Expanding STEAM Programs for a Brighter Future

As the world rapidly evolves, technology and innovation play a crucial role in shaping the future. Our students need to be equipped with the skills to succeed in this digital landscape. That’s why I’m a strong advocate for expanding STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs in our schools. The district has made strides, but we need to do more to ensure that students are prepared for the future. Whether it’s through hands-on learning in robotics, coding, or creative arts, every child should have the opportunity to explore these fields. STEAM education fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—skills that will help our students thrive. As a member of the Garvey School Board, I will work to expand resources and opportunities in STEAM education by partnering with local businesses and organizations to create valuable learning experiences.

Ensuring Student Safety

As a mother, nothing is more important to me than ensuring the safety of our children. I want every student in the Garvey School District to feel safe and supported at school. I will work to enhance safety measures across all of our schools by implementing comprehensive security protocols that address both physical safety and mental health support. From anti-bullying campaigns to accessible counseling services, I will advocate for a culture of inclusion and security. When students feel safe, they can focus on their education and personal growth.

A Vision for the Future

My vision for the Garvey School District is one where every student, regardless of their background, has the tools they need to succeed. The Garvey School District, with its rich history and deep ties to the community, should continue to lead the way in educational innovation while staying true to the values of inclusion, equity, and excellence. We need to empower our teachers, support our students, and involve parents and guardians in the decision-making process. I am committed to creating a district where every voice is heard and every student has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we can build a school district that not only excels academically but also helps students become responsible, well-rounded citizens.

If elected to the Garvey School Board, I promise to bring strong leadership, transparency, and a commitment to creating positive change. Let’s work together to build a brighter future for every student in our district.
